San Diego Surf

The second largest city in California, San Diego, is a home for surfing not only as leisure but mostly as the celebration of a cool lifestyle.

San Diego surf is special for its appreciated cultural status, a fact which has convinced the biggest name of the industry – “Rusty Surfboards” – to establish its operational center here. Home of professional surfers, San Diego is equipped with its own line of surf specialized shops – “Sun Diego”.

Best San Diego Surf

In your quest for San Diego surf knowledge, you need to concentrate your attention towards the three most praised surfing places: Windansea, Black’s Beach and Swamis.

At Black’s Beach you can come across waves higher than ten feet, but beginners should feel neglected or disappointed because there are opportunities for everyone. For those who want to learn or are unsure should choose Pacific Beach, popular for the surf teachers and partners that are easy to find. An alternative could be La Jolla shores, one of the most temperate beaches during the summer although you should be careful with the strong currents,
For the more experienced, San Diego surf offers Imperial Beach, preferred for its hollow tubes and the rocky North or South Garbage with jagged cliffs but waves worth your while.

Windansea Beach is for the well experienced surfer where you will be amazed by the incredible wave breaks right at the shoreline. It is so appreciated that overcrowding may become a problem. This area is also fit for bodysurfing but only the most skilled should enter the strong waters of this San Diego surf spot. And if these warnings will keep you away from the waves you can find sweet consolation from visiting the Surf Shack, which has recently become a historical landmark.

You might remember Swami Beach from the Beach Boys video “Surfin’ USA” – another iconic point for San Diego surf. It is the place where you are restricted to surfing only, as the beach is rough and narrow and the underwater is rocky. It is a surfer’s dream come true – a professional one’s!

An interesting spot for the experts is Newbreak, inside the Sunset Cliffs National Park, which is not quite available to anyone as its exact location is only for the knowledge of a surfer community member.

San Diego surf is one of the greatest Californian experiences and one of the most resourceful regions for extreme sensations, one that shouldn’t be talked about but should be lived.
